As part of our inclusive approach to working, Banner is now a member of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, a membership organisation that supports those who wish to discreetly identify that they have a hidden disability through the wearing of a Sunflower lanyard or Pin.
As members, we will promote the wearing of the lanyard for any colleague who wishes to and will provide training and team briefings for operational colleagues, so that they understand how they might support someone wearing the Sunflower.
Julie Hadley, CSR and Social Value Manager at Banner says: “People living with non-visible disabilities are far more common than most of us realise. It is estimated that 1 in 7 people suffer with a condition that impacts their daily lives, including their work, finding that they face barriers due to lack of understanding and negative attitudes.”
The Sunflower initiative was launched in the UK in 2016 as a symbol to discreetly indicate to people that the wearer needs additional support, help or a little more time.
Banner is training colleagues to understand why someone may wear a Sunflower lanyard or pin badge, what constitutes a hidden disability and what they can do to help support someone choosing to wear a Sunflower. By raising awareness and understanding of non-visible disabilities, we are creating a culture of acceptance and compassion, which in turn will help them to better identify the needs of their workforce or areas where improvement can be made.
