What is Pride Month?

Every year during the month of June, the LGBTQ+ community comes together to celebrate sexual diversity. As well as a month-long celebration it’s also an opportunity to peacefully protest and raise political awareness of current issues from the community.

The month of June was chosen as it was when the Stonewall riots took place in Greenwich, New York City in 1969. Activist Brenda Howard is known as the “Mother of Pride”, for her work coordinating the first LGBT pride march, and she also originated the idea for a week-long series of events around Pride Day which became the genesis of the annual LGBT Pride celebrations.

Parades are a prominent feature of Pride Month with many UK universities hosting their own events.
