The current situation has seen an unprecedented number of employees working from home, including those who have rarely worked remotely before.
The information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has signalled that it will take the current circumstances into account when considering enforcement action under GDPR. However, the ICO will still expect employers to take appropriate action to protect information when working from home.
We know staying in touch with your team is your priority right now, so we’ve compiled a list of handy reminders to maintain data protection standards and remain compliant with GDPR.
Know what needs to be protected. Jot down a list of everything you do not want to fall into the wrong hands and determine a security process for each. Paper notebooks and folders. Company phone. Company computer. Portable hard drives. USBs. Contact lists. Customer lists. You probably have more than you think.- Use work provided devices to store and access work information wherever possible. Avoid storing work information on personal devices, unless authorised to do so.
- Try to maintain a safe area when working from home to make it easier to hold confidential calls.
- Don’t forget to tidy up papers and lock devices away at the end of the day.
- Make sure any confidential documents are placed in secure storage boxes and are shredded if no longed required. Papers that cannot be disposed of should be securely stored until they can be returned to the workplace.
- Position screens and papers so they cannot be read by others.
- Be safer with passwords
