Can AI design the workplace of the future? Lauren Lawrence, Banner Interiors consultant, explores the future offices designed by ChatGPT and Dall-E Mini.
The potential of AI, particularly generative AI, has captured our collective imagination. Despite its limitations, we can’t help but speculate about what it might mean for workers and industry. Of course, we considered it ourselves and wondered how existing AI technology would do one of our jobs, designing well-balanced workplaces.
We asked both ChatGPT and Dall-E Mini to design the office of the future; here’s the result:
Flexible & Ergonomic Design
- The office space would be designed with flexibility in mind, featuring adjustable furniture, modular layouts, and adaptable workstations. This allows employees to customise their workspace to suit their individual needs and preferences.
- Ergonomic furniture would be a standard, with chairs, desks, and computer setups designed to promote proper posture and reduce the risk of musculoskeletal issues.

Natural Lighting & Biophilic Design
- Large windows and skylights would maximise natural light, reducing the need for harsh artificial lighting and creating a more pleasant atmosphere.
- Biophilic design principles would be integrated, incorporating elements of nature such as indoor plants, green walls, and natural materials. This connection to nature has been shown to reduce stress and increase well-being.

Seamless Technology Integration
- Advanced technology would be seamlessly integrated to enhance productivity and collaboration. This could include smart whiteboards, interactive displays, and virtual reality for immersive meetings and presentations.
- IoT (Internet of Things) devices could adjust lighting, temperature, and air quality based on individual preferences and real-time data.

Collaboration Spaces & Wellness Areas
- The office would feature a variety of collaborative spaces, such as meeting rooms, huddle areas, and open lounges. These spaces would be equipped with technology that supports seamless communication and brainstorming.
- Designated spaces for relaxation and well-being would be included, offering meditation rooms, quiet zones, and even fitness facilities. These areas provide employees with a chance to recharge and manage stress.

Data-Driven Insights & Continuous Feedback
- Sensors and data analytics could be employed to monitor environmental factors like air quality and temperature, providing insights for adjustments that optimise comfort and health.
- Regular surveys and feedback mechanisms would allow employees to contribute to the ongoing improvement of the office environment.

What do we think?
All of ChatGPT’s ideas are sound, but they lack human imagination. Likewise, Dall-E Mini has rendered pictures of office spaces that could exist now.
To our minds, the office of the future will be a slicker version of the office today, with hybrid and flexible working built into the very building itself.
Undoubtedly, AI will increasingly play a critical role in our day-to-day work lives as time goes on. However, in terms of office design, we expect it will mostly be used at the brief stage to help visualise and share ideas.
No matter where the office of the future takes us, Banner Interiors will continue to be committed to creating environments that meet workplace demands and enhance the performance of modern businesses. Our inspiring solutions promote productivity, encourage creativity and improve overall well-being because we believe when your space works, everything works.
